“如果你想让我睡觉,就得给我讲个故事。”女孩说。
“我不会讲故事。”胡里奥说。
“那我就不睡觉。”
大人小孩沉默片刻,彼此等待着对方更加主动一些。最后,孩子妥协了。
“你说从前,然后就知道怎么讲了。”
“从前。”胡里奥说罢,便又沉默了。
“从前有个国家。”女孩说。
“从前有个国家……”
这时,大街上飘来的一个影子掠过墙壁。
“从前有个国家,”胡里奥重复说,“那里的影子比人少。”
“为什么?”
“因为有一半的人生来就没有影子。”

他们在餐桌旁坐了下来,胡里奥便开始讲故事:“从前有一个影子洗染店。”
“什么是影子洗染店?”
“就是人们把影子拿去清洗的地方,就像清洗衣服的洗染店一样。你别老打断我。”
“继续讲吧。”
“但是,有的人把影子拿去洗涤后就再也不去取了。”
“为什么?”
“因为他们忘了,或者他们死了,或者他们付不起钱。每个月都有一些影子被扔着,没有取走。”
